Thirty-One-Derful Feet

Lisa and I enjoyed the opportunity for a little Pacific Northwest cruising aboard our new Helmsman Trawlers 31 Camano while taking her to PassageMaker’s TrawlerFest in Anacortes. This gem is the latest (and the most compact) addition to the line of Helmsman Trawlers. We’ve been working for several years on this project to update and substantially redesign the venerable Camano 31 and were glad for some sea time to “test cruise” the finished product.

What a fine little yacht this is.

We knew it would handle well and feel solid on the water — the original highly-regarded Camano hull is unchanged — and it pleased us with its surefootedness and performance. Whether running at 7 or 9 or 13 knots this boat was solid. The bow stayed down for great lower-helm visibility at all speeds, and she tracked and handled waves from all directions confidently.

As for living aboard we admittedly felt a bit self-satisfied with our interior redesign. The stateroom was nothing short of luxurious and spacious. The separate head and shower compartments are amenities associated with much larger yachts. The salon with its up galley and built-in helm and companion seating was wonderfully functional and comfortable, especially while underway. And as with all of our Helmsman Trawlers we admired the construction quality, the fine teak and varnish interior, and the tight craftsmanship so much in evidence.

Things that were even better than we expected?

  • Storage — the yard did such a great job fitting storage drawers, cabinets and cubbies into places we hadn’t anticipated that there will be no lack of storage for an extended cruise. The hanging locker in the master stateroom is really a “wow” for a boat this size. Usually the first thing to be jettisoned in the design of smaller boats, we’re glad to say that storage has increased signficantly with this redesign from the original Camano 31.
  • The engine — the Hyundai Seasall V-6 diesel was amazingly smooth and quiet. Operation, even at higher speeds, is truly pleasant.

Lisa and I are fortunate to spend a lot of time aboard quality yachts — mostly much larger than this Helmsman Trawlers 31 Camano. We can honestly say that thanks to yacht-quality construction, time-tested hull design, a completely new interior design, and the latest in well-engineered propulsion we felt like we compromised nothing while on our short cruise. This is an incredible amount of boat in a compact size, and — let’s face it — FUN is most accessible when you’re not worrying about complex systems and costs and fuel consumption and maintenance and finding large-enough moorage and….

Helmsman 2016 38 Pilothouse Offload

It is exciting every time to approach the massive Cosco cargo ship at the Port of Seattle and search for the location of the most important cargo on board. But this time was different – a search wasn’t necessary at all. The Waterline Boats delivery crew and new owner had no difficulty spotting the Helmsman Trawlers 38 Pilothouse grandly perched at the head of the ship.

We were all up bright and early Monday morning boarding our reliable and experienced tow boat. Not just ready, but enthusiastic to assist with the offload of another Helmsman Trawlers. Each offload experience is different from the last and this time the prestigious location dictated our special cargo to be offloaded first. Not the usual hurry up and wait scenario we’re used to…what a great start!

Lee and Sally Shobe ordered their new construction 38 Pilothouse last fall – we were happy that Lee could participate in this offload event especially on such a beautiful May morning.

It was an impressive and successful delivery – everything went smoothly. This one starting with a ship to shore offload of the 38 Pilothouse for inspection and placement of the slings under the hull. Once approved and ready the vessel was hoisted up off shore, traveled back over the cargo ship and slowly and gently lowered into Elliot Bay. Scott turned the helm over and secured a life jacket while Roger, now at the helm maneuvered the tow boat toward the harnessed vessel. Scott carefully stepped off the tow boat and boarded the Helmsman, attached a tow line and soon both he and the boat were pulled free from the slings. Once clear from the Cosco ship, ferry lanes, an incoming cruise ship and an outgoing working tug our crew pulled the 38 in toward our tow boat and tied it along side. Gear and crew were transferred to the Pilothouse, systems checked, fuel was added, the engine started and Lee gave a confirming thumbs up! Now it’s through the locks and on to our Waterline Boats docks!

Fresh off the ship just hours earlier this new 2016 Helmsman Trawlers 38 Pilothouse is now being fully commissioned at our Waterline Boats Docks. Come on down… see a Helmsman Trawlers for yourself. Give us a call 206 282 0110

Waterline Boats at Annapolis-Bay Bridge Boat Show!

Bay-Bridge-BS-2016Waterline Boats / Boatshed Seattle is participating in the Annapolis 2016 Bay Bridge Boat Show…

..with a 2008 Mariner 37 Seville Pilothouse.

You’ll find us on Dock C where we are displaying this beautiful blue hulled, with white topsides and shiny stainless rails vessel. This well-outfitted low hours trawler appears in excellent condition on its exterior as well as its interior and is a MUST SEE!

Once you step aboard you will see that the roomy interior design gives the feeling of being on a much larger boat than what the model number implies. The warmth and elegance of the teak and holly and the quality and craftsmanship of the joinery are sure to impress.

Our agents will be happy to point out the many unique features of the pilothouse design. The hide-away storage, great visibility from the pilothouse helm and throughout, the day head off the salon and the separate head and shower in the master stateroom just to name a few.

This boat was originally imported and sold as a Mariner Yachts International 37 Seville Pilothouse, the predecessor to the current Helmsman Trawlers® 38 Pilothouse. Our Waterline Boats agents are prepared to supply information on all the Helmsman Trawlers Models – 43 Pilothouse – 38 Pilothouse – 37 Sedan – 31 Camano.
